My tip would be: Get someone else to do it. If you can't sing, you just can't sing!

I've been playing piano for 8 years and guitar for 3. I can sing almost on perfect rhythm. However, the sound that comes out of my mouth isn't the most pleasurable so I've knocked it down to only doing back ups. I did voice lessons also. It helped me to sing in key and in rhythm. However, even though I was hitting the right notes, it still wasn't a pretty sound. So as someone said prior, if you can't sing, then you can't sing. I found a lead singer, he's really good and since then the public opinion of the band I'm in has shifted very positively. If you HAVE to sing, practice woth your vocals being 75% louder thanthe rest of the music. This way you can hear every sound you make and from there you can begin to make small imporovements. Be warned, you can't use what's not there.
Good luck!

Wouldn't it matter what kind of music you'd be singing over?
Something harsher would still work out if your voice sounded like broken glass.
Seeking after a 'tailored' voice isn't very appealing.
Though again, it depends on what kind of music it is.

Here are some tips:
1) Audiate: Hear the note before you sing it so you hit it everytime, don't rush into a song you don;t know or you will look foolish.
2) Sing above the pencil. When you picture yourself singing and where the sounds are coming from picture this. Put a pencil in your mouth, section 1 is all sounds coming from below the pencil, lower jaw downward, section is everything above the pencil. Above the pencil is ALWAYS where you want to be singing from. This is the source in getting more power, volume and range. To get a sense of this do a regular baritone or tenor scale whatever you are. Sing the scale by making a NNYYAA sound in a high pitched, nasally almost cartoony voice, that feeling you get in your sinuses is telling you you're sing from the right place. You will NEVER lose your voice sing this way, this is how metal vocalist can sing the way they do night after night.
3) Sing songs in your range
4) Practice scales with the intention of increasing your range
5) Don;t listen to yourself, that is to say your voice is exactly that, your voice. You will fo so far when you stop comparing yourself to other singers you admire.
6) Alcohol, Citrus, coughing, vomiting and ice cold water will only hurt you
7) If it hurts you're doing it wrong so stop.
8) In band or live situation let the mic do the work for you, if you're going horse from trying to compete with the band they need to turn down not you having to turn up.
9) I learned harmony by singing the wrong notes until it some how sounded good with out if being the note of the melody, have fun with it. It sounds bad but its for a purpose.
Hope this helps

Try some vocal exercises
Hello there
Why don't you try some vocal exercises and give your voice a little bit of sharpness and flexibility so that it can help you carry songs with an ease. You can also go for some singing coaching classes. They are going to help you alot.

My advice would be, if you can't then leave it. Just play an instrument. Atleast a fairly good voice is required to make an impact, unless u have one you can't work much on improving it.
