What Are You Listening to: The one after Deux

Since Part Deux passed the 1000 posts mark....time for a new thread

Also....taking into account that newbies never bother to go through an entire thread, I think it's once again time for a new thread.

This doesn't mean any newbies shouldn't check out the older threads.

For those interested, you can find some great recordings in the first two threads. There're many great recordings mentioned in them!

.

1. Duke Ellington - Blues in Orbit
2. Lou Blackburn - The Complete Imperial Sessions (have to give major props to Blue Note for reissuing this. Blackburn and especially Horace Tapscott, Baby!)

Cold Bleak Heat - It's Magnificent, But It Isn't War

Paul Flahetry - alto & tenor (the man could have played Moses in the wilderness) *
Chris Corssano - drums (probably my favorite young drummer, he's a BEAST on the drums.)
Matt Heyner - bass
Greg Kelley - trumpet

Anytime I am within any performance by Flaherty and Corssano, Satchmo is all over it. There latest released The Beloved Music, will be somewhere towards the Satchmo Summitt for 2006.

Some mp3's on their site.

What's not to love, it's Jimmy Smith.

The Beastie Boys sampled Root Down (and Get It), and also gave a shout out to Jimmy on their song Root Down.

yeah, I know. I was a big Beastie Boys fan for a few years and thought the 'anthology' was a waste. I actually bought the 'root down' single that the boys put out. I like Jimmy Smith, I guess I wasn't used to his 'funk' side.

Damn, some people that were either quicker than I was or just got lucky in the order that their orders were processed managed to sell out 3 of the Monk CDs I ordered, as well as one each by Dolphy, Coltrane, and Hampton Hawes.
