Gary Thomas - 'Till We Have Faces' - JMT Records (1992)
Thomas is a composer, player (sax, flute) and teacher from Baltimore. Adventurous and muscular are two adjectives that come to mind when thinking of his sound. He's knotty without being dry. There's enough funk in the mix keep the knottiness lubricated. Good modern (post bop?) jazz. Maybe if David Murray added a dash of 'M Base' to his sound it would come out like this.
Terri Lynn Carrington does a bang up job on the drums. Pat Metheny is on electric guitar and he seems right at home having a ball digging into some serious playing. This album is all covers of jazz and pop standards that are given totally new interpretations. Well recorded, too.
Beyond this album, I would also recommend Thomas' first release, 'The Seventh Quadrant' (1987). Knotty and muscular (again) with great electric guitar work from Paul Bollenback. Hell, give any of Gary Thomas' work a listen and I'll bet you'll be a happy camper, as long as modern jazz is your thing.
