1. Dizzy/Newk/Stitt - Sonny Side Up (This is one of the best Jam sessions, you will find.)

2. Art Blakey - A Night in Tunisia (Blakey has several recordings with this title, or a variation of it. This is the RCA version. It was reissued in 2002. This also has one of the best covers of Dizzy's song A Night in Tunisia. Blakey's Blue Note recording Night in Tunisia is also excellent, and was also given a recent reissue.) On this particular recording, both Jackie McLean and Johnny Griffin are in this version of the Jazz Messengers, and are En Fuego.

Well, I meant average in context with their other work. AMG gave "The Hawk Relaxes" 1.5/5, Lockjaw's "Cookbook, Vol. 3" 3/5, Bags' "For Someone I Love" 3/5. The Lockjaw, Coltrane/Burrell, and Bags got 3/4 in the Penguin Guide, but that's pretty much the average rating in that book. The Nelson was the one I was most displeased about (Screamin' the Blues). I didn't think any of them would be bad (I did order them, after all), but I'm certainly not as upset about them as I am with, say, some of the Monk CDs that got cancelled in the last run.

About to start a serious Duke Ellington Festival, which will last a few days.

Duke Ellington - The Centennial Edition: (The Complete RCA VICTOR Recordings 1927 - 1973)

One of the MOST ESSENTIAL of Box Sets, no matter genre. The packaging wasn't well thought out, so be careful with how you handle the CD slips. The CD's will fall out easily, if you're not careful. If you can find this now out of print set,

GET IT!

YO!

I didn't even look at what they layed the box set out on.

Forget about my taste, as if Lady Satchmo would ever have anything so damn ulgy looking
