First listen, I'm kind of undecided so far...

any opinions on this band?

Best place to start?

Their best period is when their founding member Julius Hemphill was still in the group. If for no other reason, it was valuable as a showcase for Julius Hemphill....especially as an arranger/orchestrator/composer.

You want those that involve Hemphill....especially the Black Saint releases. Several of the Black Saint's are classics of the period. After that, things got less consistent, but never uninteresting.

W.S.Q.
Revue
Live in Zurich
Live at Brooklyn Academy of Music

Of the non-Black Saint's which still included Hemphill....

Plays Duke Ellington
Dances and Ballads
Rhythm and Blues

The best non-Hemphill would be their homage to him.

Requiem for Julius

i haven't 'officially' listened to music in a few months, but....
anthony braxton's "creative orchestra music" is stuck in my head.

it moves in such crunchy shapes!

hello to all, also. it's been a while.

my computer broke a few months ago, and i erased my ipod before that, and i don't own a cd player, so... yeah. no music.

i wish i could be influenced by more things! i was just going cold turkey on music a while back because i was listening to too many different things and not enjoying it anymore. i kind of turned into an intellectual collector

Hey blah, nice to see you around again. Last I remember, you weren't listening to music to avoid subconsciously copying it in your own compositions. How's the composing going?

I just listened to Les Stances A Sophie by Art Ensemble of Chicago for the first time/ wow/ it made me feel frightened excited and sad. It's a film soundtrack apparently. Has anyone seen the movie?

Now I'm listening to the Coltrane mp3's linked to me on the coltrane/ayler thread.
