While Garrison performed on 8 songs during the Village Vanguard dates; he wouldn't become an official member and replace Reggie Workman until early December 1961 aka a month later.

What is now known as the Classic Quartet would go to Rudy Van Gelder's place to record for the first time on Dec. 21, 1961 for the sessions that make up Ballads.

While Dolphy left the group in early December 1961, he would perform one more time with Coltrane and the Classic Quartet.

It was at Birdland on Feb. 9, 1962.

Charley records released it as John Coltrane Live at Birdland Featuring Eric Dolphy.

Just finished:
Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood - Out Louder

Doesn't really strike me as being as good as a typical MMW album but a decent listen all the same.
