Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet - "Voodoo" - 1985
Wayne horvitz - Piano
John Zorn - Sax
Ray Drummond - Bass
Bobby Previte - Drums
Yikes! It's been @ 22 years since this recording came out. Time flies, yet I still think of Horvitz, Zorn and Previte as young downtown-ish new wave artists. They are still 'pushing the envelope' today but there's been a lot of water over the damn since. Here they play the music of Sonny Clark without going outside. It's inside with a bit of an astringent/pungent vibe. In the liner notes Horvitz says that they were not trying to bring new meaning to these tunes, they just wanted to work with them using their (then) mid 80s perspective. The result is bluesy as all get out (for downtown guys) along with a nice open feeling. Ray Drummond is a star here keeping things anchored and f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e. Add Previte on drums (somewhat of a Joe Morello 'less is more thing) and the bottom of this recording is sweet. Zorn adds just a pinch of skronk and twists here and there to spice up the proceedings. Jazz fans of all stripes can dig this one.

Walt Dickerson - Peace - 1975
Walt Dickerson - vibes
Lyle Atkinson - bass
Andrew Cyrille, drums
Two long pieces of free -ish jazz, perfect for late nights or focused listening. Sometimes it wanders into sonic forms that are not immediately recognizable as 'jazz'. I read somewhere that Dickerson is one of the few vibists whose playing is not influenced by Lionel Hampton. Nice modern vibes! I need to hear more of Dickerson's 70s output on Steeplechase Records.

He...Who Drops Knowledge
|
Gianni Gebbia - Arcana Major/Sonic Tarots Session
As those of you who have been around long enough to have had me drop knowledge about this to you know....it's one of the best solo saxophone recordings in the last 20-years.
It's a limited edition release of only 500 and several of you took the hint back when I first dropped the knowledge....amazingly it can still be found at a few places.
YO!
