Ok...can someone explain to me the cape/blanket thing with james brown. They do it on the tonight show with david letterman with random guests. I always wanted to know how it came about.
Mean....Hes kneeling and singing then someone comes out and puts a blanket on him and then escorts him off stage then he throws the blanket off and goes back out and sings!

The Cape Routine is one of several of the signature routines of The Godfather of Soul and Soul Brother #1....in this case it signified the last song in the performance.




Danny Ray his valet would come onstage to put the cape over DA GODFATHER'S shoulders when he collapses onstage after becoming "overcome" from giving his all (usually after performing Please, Please, Please), and they slowly walk off....but at the last moment because of all of the screams by the women reviving him, DA GODFATHER throws it off and goes back to perform somemore....until he is overcome once again....and this goes on several times before the show ends. The women would eat it up.



It was pure showmanship, back in the day in his prime now one wanted to follow DA GODFATHER after his performances. That included The Stones

Several people have borrowed it over the years, including Paul Shaffer, who would put the cape on certain guests. DA GODFATHER would put it over Shaffer's shoulder on one show.
