Perhaps this would be of interest for the noobies

Quote:
TheRockRadio.com (www.therockradio.com) report that Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told England's BBC Radio 1 that the group's new album is likely to be released in the summer or early autumn of 2007.

Ulrich explained, "I think we've realized that the creative process works a little slower for us than it used to, and we're OK with that. It's not a bad thing, unless, of course, you're waiting for a record."

Ulrich added that the band now is far more relaxed than the turbulent state in which it recorded 2003's 'St. Anger'. The drummer said, "Everybody's getting along, having a great time... Back on ('St. Anger'), it was just a very different experience 'cause we had to kind of get it back together. Now everything's cool."

Metallica is recording the new album, its ninth studio effort, with famed producer Rick Rubin.

The band is currently on a European festival tour, during which it has debuted a new song and has also played its classic 1986 album "Master Of Puppets" in its entirety.
GASP! A new Metallica album in 2007? This may have been mentioned somewhere else on the forum, but ongoing discussion about this can continue here.

No more Bob Rock, they've added Rick Rubin. It just might be tolerable

Amorphis - Eclipse (Heavy)
Decent but not on par with their older stuff

Communic - Waves Of Visual Decay (Progressive)
Kind of lame if you ask me. They are good in the technical aspects of the music but I didn't like the lyrics or the singing style at all.

Darkthrone - The Cult Is Alive (Black)
If you like Darkthrone, you will like this. Fairly raw production style which is definitely a DT trademark.

Enslaved - Ruun (Viking Black)
Pretty good. Not as good as Isa or Monumension but better than most metal albums this year.

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance (Doom)
Wasn't that big a fan of this. I had heard that it was supposed to be really good but...

Ministry - Rio Grande Blood (Post-Punk / Industrial)
I love Ministry and this is a good album but it doesn't compare with their classics from the late 80's and early 90's. I liked Houses of the Mole better than this as well.

Satyricon - Now, Diabolical (Black)
This is probably my favorite metal album of the year so far. They've slowed down their tempo a lot and the songs have a real groove to them.

Slayer - Christ Illusion (Thrash)
Only heard it a few times so far but I like it. Standard Slayer (which is a good thing).

Tool - 10,000 Days (Avantgarde/Alternative)
Really good, but it takes a while to absorb it. I can't really listen to just one song. It's all or nothing with this album.

Zyklon - Disintegrate (Black Thrash)
Sounds about the same as World ov Worms and Aeon to me.

Might I add Keep of Kalessin to the list? Their new album "Armada" is very good.

Exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for

Amorphis - Eclipse (Heavy)
Heard it at a friends house and wasn't a big fan of it. Definately not on par with the older albums.

Communic - Waves Of Visual Decay (Progressive)
I don't know about these guys, but if they are another one of those kinda cheesy, technical, somewhat progressive bands, then I might just skip it

Darkthrone - The Cult Is Alive (Black)
I liked the album, as I like most of what Darkthrone does. If you are running low on metal, I suggest giving this a try. Pre-requisites: Black Metal 101

Enslaved - Ruun (Viking Black)
Good album. As I've said in other threads, not my favorite -- and possibly not even in my top 3. Below the Lights, Isa, Monumension, and even Frost were more satisfying. But like hezagenius said, one of the better albums of 2006 that I've heard.

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance (Doom)
I have yet to listen to this one.

Ministry - Rio Grande Blood (Post-Punk / Industrial)
I've always liked their style, but this album does not do it for me.

Satyricon - Now, Diabolical (Black)
This one is on my urgent to-get list after reading what you had to say about it.

Slayer - Christ Illusion (Thrash)
A sweet Slayer album. Even though my fanaticism about this album has waned a bit, I still think its great stuff But then again, I'm pretty biased towards Slayer...

Tool - 10,000 Days (Avantgarde/Alternative)
Can't say I'm a fan. Seemed too derivative of their earlier work. I don't think its a bad album or anything, but there was nothing that tickled my fancy.

Zyklon - Disintegrate (Black Thrash)
It's usually gotta be good Black metal for me to enjoy it... and if they sound like Aeon, I might not get it, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Wow, I actually know some of these albums...not many mind you, but some...therefore I am almost completely out of touch, instead of the full enchilada! So here are a few observations. I owe the new Celtic Frost a listen still - I know, I am a bad 80's thrasher for that, but hey, I've been busy so back off

I have already mentioned that I liked the new Slayer, and all of that is still true, although I am not listening to it once every two days anymore. A solid effort that for once doesn't have to apologize for the downtuned songs, a very confident album that, for the first time in many years, is not for completionists only.

Venom - Metal Black. I have to admit this - before the Slayer came out this was my favorite metal album of the year, although I tend to give a free pass to Cronos and company. Nothing special if you aren't already a Venom fan, certainly. But 25 years after Welcome to Hell (and a..."similar" album cover ) the drummer can at least keep time. Cronos also obviously has no idea what "tempus fugit" actually means, which is consistent with his misuse of common phrases and names over the years. Venom's Legions are going wild yet again...those of us that can still move around in our old age. "I bear the soul of Satan/I wear the seal of death" only makes sense to Cronos, and his faithful followers, and we like it that way

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance. I like this one too, but not quite as much as Viva Emptiness The guitars are a bit crunchier than I think they need to be as well, although they fit in some of the really low songs. The low B flat makes it tough on the ears, but thankfully they don't employ it in all 12 tracks. I finally got a version without the audio messages, but I still am programmed to expect "You are listening to the new song..." just before the first chorus of "Leaders" And when they are catchy, they are still irresistable - I think "My Twin" is a great song partially because of the hooks.

Enslaved - Ruun This is actually the first album I have heard by them, and I do like it a lot. It's something I've just run across but that is my early assessment. They have a good musical ear and understand good songwriting, something that is sometimes underrated in metal. I'll be checking out earlier material.

Tool - 10,000 Days. Well, it is exactly what I thoguht it was going to be. That is to say, it's either Undertow 4, Aenima 3 or Lateralus 2. None of it is awful or even bad, but it is clear that the band really doesn't have anything else to say. That's all fine and good, really, but I am not interested in hearing them take 5 years to trot this stuff out. I discovered OPeth's catalog starting the middle of last year (a little late, I know) and I was no longer insterested in Tool. Even so, I had hoped this would be more memorable.

Theatre of Tragedy - Storm. I like the new singer, but not as much as Liv. Personally I prefer the earlier TOT stuff anyway, but these songs seem a little bit light even by mor recent standards. I do think some of them are really good, and it's fair to say all of them are pretty catchy, at least, so it would be a pleasant listen, except for the fact that my version of this album has all the songs crossfading into each other, which might just be the way someone ripped them. If it was done intentionally, the band needs to fire their producer and manager immediately, because it is one of the dumbest ideas conceivable for this type of album.

In Flames - Come Clarity. I really don't feel that their numetalish approach does much for me, although I do really like some of these songs. Granted, the "second coming of Maiden" days of Jester Race, Whoracle and much of Colony would have gotten old by now, but they seemed to have more going for them at that time. I have to say I love the "Nu Gothenburg" label

I did hear some of the Lacuna Coil, and I thought it was okay, not great. They've always been a little hit or miss to me, although I think band-wise they are solid and that Christina Scabbia is an excellent vocalist. Not quite so much as the goddess Anneke Van Giersbergen from The Gathering, whose album I haven't listened to a whole lot yet, but I will. I did enjoy what I heard, but I can't get a real take on it.

I noticed the new Voivod is not on that list...I haven't had time to listen to it just yet although the one song I have herd is great.

Well there you go...an old-timer's take on about a tenth of the list

I may be in the minority on this album. Most reviews I've read are not kind. Mostly the same old "they sold out when they signed with Roadrunner" crap. It is not your typical BM album but change is a good thing. You can check out a video for K.I.N.G. here:
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com.au/...con/video.aspx

This will give you an idea of what the new album sounds like.
