Prog Rock With Extra Cheese

How much cheese do you like with your Progressive rock? Do you like a good ole romp through symphonic land? Or do you prefer something a little more serious?

Personally, I like a little cheese, depending on mood. However, after time, and the introduction of Jazz into the diet, the tolerance for extra cheese lowered quickly. How 'bout you?

Why not give an example of what you consider:

Extra Cheese
Regular Portion
A Little Cheese
Lactose Intolerant

Hey, maybe I didn't think this thread out clearly beforehand. Now I have to do some homework. Damn you, Satchmo!

Of course I can forsee this as being another part of the discussion. The definition of Cheese.

Extra Cheese - Asia
Regular Portion - Queen
A Little Cheese - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Lactose Intolerant - King Crimson

OK, so what's the "cheese factor" on Yes, in your esteemed opinion?

I don't know that I would vault King Crimson to the coveted "Lactose Intolerant" category, myself. I think you have to be a little grandiose just to work within that realm of progressive rock. That doesn't mean I don't think it can be great, mind you, jsut that I don't see how you can have a progressive rock band that doesn't have any characteristics that could be construed as "cheesy" by someone. King Crimson are by no means immune to this, IMO.

If you think ELP has only "a little cheese" you may want to take a listen to Love Beach

In a nutshell, whatever cheese factor you would put for early Genesis and early Yes, that's where my vote will be cast

Yeah, me too (and throw early Kansas in there as well)...

To true. I wasn't really comparing Progressive Rock with other genres. I was thinking more in the range of Cheese in the Progressive Rock world. It is a special brand after all.

I forgot about that, as well as many other fine examples. How 'bout this I'll list a particular album.

So for those keeping score at home.

Extra Cheese - Asia - Well. . . . uh. Next.

Regular Portion - Queen - A Night at the Opera

A Little Cheese - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Trilogy

Lactose Intolerant - King Crimson - The Power to Believe

I would say it depends on the album. If we go with my favorite, Close to the Edge, then I would say A Little.

If you go with something like 90125 I would vote for a Regular dose. However, I haven't heard that one in a long time, so I would have to give it a listen again to issue a final opinion.
