This has hit me hard, not so much because I idolized the man, like many great music artists I don't think he was the nicest fellow to be around... But his art has touched me stronger than perhaps any other individual besides Lennon...
We all pick out a favorite album when it comes to polls and such, but Forever Changes took me to a whole other level when I first heard it almost 25 years ago... I had never even heard of that album or Love... And I was well versed in classic rock at that point (Beatles Stones, Who, Airplane, etc.). The album blew me away... Over the next decade I realized it was indeed my favorite album (I always use ten years as a minumum barometer to truly judge any piece of music)...
Anywho, I really feel a detailed argument can be made that Forever Changes is the greatest album ever recorded. Or perhaps the greatest in western civilization... The album has almost every kind of western music except for Metal (although the guitar scream solo at the end of "Live and Let Live" or the free jazz like ending of "The Good Humor Man Sees Everything Like This" should satisfy any need for an electric mind explosion)... Hard rock, soft rock, light classical orchestration, folk, folk-rock, delicate ballads, deep epics, latin sounds, jazz influences, bluesy rock, proto-punk, psychedelia, profound lyrics, silly humorus lyrics, social commentary,,, the album has it all... While it clearly is in the "rock" style format, it transcends rock...
It may not have the happy feel of some Beatles albums, but as an entire work it eclipses both Revolver and Sgt. Pepper... The softer touches the album possesses may elude a younger crowd, but anyone who has traveled a bit down life's sometimes difficult road can probably relate to the entire vibe of the album...
It is a masterpiece in every sense of the word...
And,,,, I haven't even mentioned the other great works Lee created including what I consider the greatest blues song ever recorded (the heavier version of "Signed D.C. that was on "Out Here")... He also created one of the first punk style songs ever in "7 and 7 is" as well as a host of other classic tunes... But Forever Changes is Love's only album that plays as one "idea"...
Good bye Arthur Lee... I for one will do what I can to insure the Universe understands what a great talent you were...

Wow, that article was good, especially this:
What does it sound like (Forever Changes)? Well, imagine taking one of the most tuneful and adventurous pop albums by the Byrds ("Younger Than Yesterday" maybe, or "Notorious Byrd Brothers") and allowing it to marinate for a year or two in the most decadent and exotic spices. Then toss in some of the unhinged paranoia of Syd Barrett and the early Pink Floyd, the reclusive melancholy of post-surf Brian Wilson, the cotton-candy orchestration of '60s arrangers such as Paul Mauriat ("Love Is Blue") or Joshua Rifkin (who fashioned Judy Collins's hit version of "Both Sides Now") and set it all to dark and prophetic lyrics that seem to mean much more than they dare to say. "Forever Changes" combines a seductive surface prettiness with a sense that something is desperately wrong. It is psychedelia at its edgiest.
