MD Bands
Does anyone know of any bands from Maryland or the surrounding area in the late sixties or early seventies? All I know of are:
The Peppermint Rainbow, which was similar to the Mamas & Papas or Spanky & Our Gang (I think it was Cass that discovered the band)and Flavor, which is similar to the Spencer Davis Group. Thanks.

None that I can think of off the top of my head, but I don't know much about the local rock scene of that area from any era... Sorry...

Technically speaking, Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore.
The Electras were originally from New Hampshire.

Hmmm...pretty weak there, 'great satchmo'.
Great band from Maryland, early 70s was ORANGE WEDGE. They played a sort of heavy garagey psych with lots of changes, great riffs, very unique. Kind of HTF now, but their s/t and "No One Left But Me" are worth seeking out, even a cdr copy.
HALF JAPANESE - formed in the mid/late 70s and I believe they are still together, perhaps in hiatus. Great band, if you like all-over-the-place infidel punk with sloppo horns, etc. Their lyrics are intriguing, so simple and naive, like an art form unto themselves.
The pickin's are kinda thin for early 70s bands, but I will mention CRACK THE SKY. Although they were technically formed in Weirton WV, they really hit big in Maryland (not really anywhere else). They were kind of adopted as Baltimore's city's 'local' classic rock band in the 70s/80s. A weird sort of STEELY DAN / MAX WEBSTER vibe...
Not 70s, but KIX were formed in the late 70s in western Maryland. Love the first album, an AC/DC knockoff.
Marty Friedman (Shrapnel Records artist, MEGADETH, etc) was born in DC but spent most of his early years in southern MD.
Zappa spent only early childhood years in Edgewood, MD and Baltimore MD and couldn't wait to get the hell out of the state. He alleged that Baltimore made him constantly sick and he didn't feel 'well' until moving to California.
Scott Weinrich (ST VITUS, THE OBSESSED, THE HIDDEN HAND) is a DC/MD native. I'm not sure if he was born there, but he's a big part of the MD doom scene.
I'm sure more will come as I think about it...an unusual area for artists.
