Recommendations for my GF

I've been looking for some non-pop music for my GF to get into. Her B-day is coming up and I was thinking about giving her a CD (along with her present) with some stuff she hasn't heard before.

Here are some of her rock tastes: Guster, Something Corporate, John Mayer, Death Cab For Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, Bright Eyes, Fallout Boy, All-American Rejects, The Fray

What are some of your favorite bands that have a similar style to any one of these?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Edit: include Placebo in these artists, because I have a good feeling that she would like a bunch of songs by them

First: T, although I'm sure your girlfriend's a great person, my condolesences about her taste in music.

Now, on to some actual reccomendations. Regarding the Death Cab, Bright Eyes, and Mayer: go for some acoustic singer-songwriters, I would think. Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, the like. Regarding the rest: no idea.

Drive Like Jehu? I'd also suggest some Elliott Smith and Arcade Fire.

Well if she likes Death Cab, then she'd definitely like The Postal service.

Some Jens Lekman could also be considered. And maybe these: El Perro Del Mar, Patrick Wolf, Feist, Mirah, Janove ottesen.

In the end, what we have are these little, great moments. They come and they go. That's as good as it gets. But, still, isn't that great?

Hmmm ... no points for guessing she's an emo chick!

Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Dashboard and Fallout Boy are all emo bands. Or were emo bands, I've not idea what the precise definition is any more. In that case try Pedro The Lion, Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, they're all similar emo groups, and all of them are OK.

Probably not emo, but SERIOUSLY good nonetheless, are Neutral Milk Hotel and At The Drive-In. These are very different bands and not the most accessable, so you probably wouldn't want to include them in a compilation.

Hope this helps!
