Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Dashboard and Fallout Boy are all emo bands. Or were emo bands, I've not idea what the precise definition is any more. In that case try Pedro The Lion, Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, they're all similar emo groups, and all of them are OK.

Probably not emo, but SERIOUSLY good nonetheless, are Neutral Milk Hotel and At The Drive-In. These are very different bands and not the most accessable, so you probably wouldn't want to include them in a compilation.

Hope this helps!

Elliott Smith emo, qué? If you'd call Heatmiser that, ok, but not his solo work for sure.

Anyway I'd go with Geryon and Simeon's picks, except for Arcade Fire, avoid Neutral Milk Hotel and Modest Mouse as well, but that's just me, I guess...

Elliott Smith sure is emo in my book. Heartfelt misery, check. Impassioned singing, check. If Pedro the Lion is emo Elliott Smith's deffinately emo. You can't say they don't make the same type of music.

Alright, I link the tag emo rather to those whiney poppunkish bands though, Smith is more a singer/songwriter, in the tradition of Nick Drake &co. I just don't like the tag, I guess.

Chicks dig Tom Waits. He's pretty emo sometimes. Well, not really.
