Jazz Clarinet

I gots a question that has burdened me for quite a while. Clarinet can be a jazz instrument, obviously. It is popular in New Orleans Jazz, and when I went to see the New Orleans jazz Orchestra at Lincoln Center, there were definately clarinet players.
However in jazz ensembles at school or most bands I see, they do NOT have clarinets, not even for auxilary. I had band teachers who said that the clarinet is not played for jazz, but I am very supportive of the clarinet playing jazz music!
Of course, you can tell I can play jazz clarinet... And I improvise it as well.(Though I'm actually a bassist and trumpet player!=D) But I just want to say that I think the clarinet should be more appreciated as a jazz instrument! Any opinions?

Any teacher who told you the clarinet isn't a Jazz instrument is not only incompetent, they don't know anything about Jazz or it's history.

I would love hearing your teachers explaining their theory to all these greats.

The Clarinet was one of the most important instruments from the early days of Jazz. It was not until BeBop that it lost popularity, because of the difficulty involved in playing a Clarinet in relation to Bebop. It has made a come back with Avant-Garde/Free Jazz/Free Improv.

What particular sub-genre of Jazz is the teacher having the band playing?

Sidney Bechet rulez, yo!

Dolphy, too (he played bass clarinet)!

Chris Speed!

and that red-headed movie director guy with glasses.

Old-school saxophonists play their instruments like clarinets.

I'm sure your band teachers will say that saxophones don't belong in an orchestra.

A whole bunch of instruments in this thread, that your teacher probably didn't know have been used in Jazz.

Despite this, you always want to respect your teachers and do your best in class.

Sometimes, you just can't win. A famous, epileptic Russian author called it "administrative passion." You come across this at the hardware store, school, movie theaters, restaurants. What are you going to do? Sit and argue with everyone until they behave reasonably?

It's a bunch of disempowered people who have been allowed the slightest amount of authority possible and it drives them insane.

Doing his best in class is more than enough. He doesn't need or have to respect incompetence. Although, that doesn't mean start insulting the teacher, either.
