Here is something from back in 1993 that basically covers a great many things I shared on this board. Steve Albini wrote it just after In Utero was released.

If you ever plan to deal with any label (no matter size), I would suggest reading it.

I used to listen to the radio when I was in my early teens, but the music I was beginning to explore wasn't being played on regular primetime radio. I was starting to dig Blues - and really didn't care for what was popular at the time: STP, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains (and still don't find any of those bands overly intriguing - I actually really dislike much of their music - though I've come to enjoy Nirvana in the slightest sense, and at the very least appreciate them) - and had to stay up after midnight to hear any Blues on the radio. So, since I considered staying up all hours of the night impractical, I just started buying Blues compilations, and then albums/compilations by single musicians.

And still, I think radio sucks. iTunes Radio is no different.

Pretty interesting, insightful, and enjoyable read; I liked his writing style although it wasn't very warm . But with all this said how would a band go about making money? I have heard this same claim by so many other peoples, record companies screwing people especially with album sales, but there are plenty of bands making it and profiting it. For instance I know a couple local bands that got signed in high school and made a pretty penny off it (maybe not millions but definitely a step up from 800 bucks).

Well I don't know where you are from but every where I have lived in the states I've been able to tune into some great jazz radio on fm and I think some pretty good blues and bluegrass on am. Doesn't sound like the case for you though.

I do enjoy sports radio too, especially for my baseball. The commentators on tv just don't have the same style as the radio guys.

I like the payoff at the end:

For me, radio is all about talk. For the most part its the only radio that I pay attention to. Be it sports, NPR, traffic, news, politics. . . whatever.

There are some really good college radio programs around NC that cover the gambit of styles, but I still prefer to program my own music.

Still, I think music radio has its place. Working outside with my father building a deck is not the same without a little classic rock radio.

I think this is what hurts satellite radio too. iTunes. It's the satellite radio killer. Why listen to someone elses programing? lol.

Well I know that the radio was key for me to discover new music before all this digital stuff. I was lucky to have Seton Hall's radio to tune into since college stations are able to avoid the play lists that big stations provide.

But now with stuff like allmusic, last.fm, music plasma, I feel like its a lot easier to discover music much more efficiently.

Still a DJ can provide you with a new song or artist you have never heard before that you may have never discovered on your own.
