active vs passive electronics

so everything is in order for my new guitar (even if i did over react a little yesterday ).

the only issue now is having to chose between an active setup with EMG pickups or a passive setup with Seymour Duncans. i've never tried active pickups but from what i'm reading online it seems to be more geared towards a metal and cheese rock sound. the passives seem to be favored for a more all around sound.

the simplest way to explain what my 'band' sounds like would be like hearing black sabbath playing free jazz while trying to listen to sonic youth cover p-funk.

suffice to say i don't shy away from pedals or buzz, i'm split between being a wall of sound soloist and a typical rusty blues rock wanker.

so i wonder would getting the EMGs really cut out a lot of noise from the pedals? would it be detrimental to a wall of sound approach? or would it clean up my actual guitar singal enough to hear each string through the fuzz while maintaining the noise and feedback?

conversly would having swanky SDs give me a warmer wall? or would i have to constantly worry about feeding back?

Well, I would recommend one of each. They both have their own sounds and benefits. Of course my experience is with basses instead of 6 strings. My active bass is so much crisper and responsive to the tone controls, but it's a fretless so it has to be. While my passive has that great warm sound, doesn't require batteries, and of course is not as sensitive. My only electric 6 string is a passive SG and it's pretty strong. Maybe try some different models at your local guitar whore house.

All Satchmo is going to say....is if you do go into a store.....please don't break out with Stairway to Heaven or Free Bird....

I would have to find a new accompanist, if you did. Toot Toot wouldn't be too happy about that.

the thing is my mind goes blank when i sit down with a guitar in the store. i get way too nervous (last time i tried a pedal in the store i just hit an A chord a few times and twiddled the knobs hehe). but i'm also reminded about an article i read years ago about buying new guitars, IT'S NOT AN AUDITION. you aren't there to impress the staff or wow your friends, it's about trying the instruement. so i'll end up trying each fret on each string to make sure they don't buzz and bends on each fret for the top half of the neck to ensure that it's smooth and buzz free. no stairway freebird or smoke on the water for me

I can't steer you any direction here really...I can say that the actives are used a lot more for metal and whatnot but I have never experimented with one to see if I could get nice NONmetal sounds out of them...I just never liked the idea of my guitar depending upon a battery.
I can say that the swanky Seymour Duncans are luvly though...

I would normally let something like this go....but even taking into accounting you being guitar master panbient and leader of Toot Toot, you REALLY need to get out a LOT more.
