If I want to investigate / understand Ligeti's music, what concise list of performances should I start with? Thanks.

It's going to be player-piano and barrel-organ music for me tonight when I get home.

This is a get-it-all situation. Forget understanding it...whatever that means.

Complete chamber works on Sony. All his orchestral pieces are great.

I'm not familiar with his work, but... R.I.P. I'll give a listen to some of the recordings mentioned by Roivas and Satchmo.

If you like what he did for Kubrick's Space Odyessy....you can hear all of

Lux Aeterna, which he took portions from, for it. He also used parts of Atmosphères, and Requiem.
