Heathen - 2005 Demo

I'd come across this after hearing some people from a metal forum rave about it. At first it sounds pretty much like generic thrash metal, but once it grows on your it is some of the best thrash you are ever likely to hear. I can't find any flaws in it Arrows of Agony especially has an excellent chorus.

9.5/10

Another classic Chiron review....were it starts out sounding like the record is crap, and ends up getting 8+ rating.

I like the intro to "Hypnotized." It sounds like the lost track off of Metallica's Justice album. They also do a respectable cover of Sweet's "Set Me Free," which I liked better than the original.

That's pretty much it for me and Heathen. You could do worse, certainly, but back when they were still new, they didn't hold up well against like thrash bands.

Totally disagree!! I've yet to find a lead player in the genre that can match Doug Piercy's fiery trails on "World's End","Pray for Death", "Death By Hanging", etc.. That first HEATHEN album is top-notch thrash metal with great hooks and melodies.

Well, I was actually more into the band than anyone else I knew, but I always thiought that was because I was the one who actually bought the Breaking The Silence album (which cost 2 hours' wages at the time). The chops are good, or acceptable, at least. The singer, I could have comepletely done without. And some of the lyrics were hilarious...especially "Death By Hanging."

Back then, of course, there was no MP3 sampling or anything, but the "Set Me Free" video was good. I think if the band stayed truer to more straightforward metal, they would have been a much better band. Trying to do thrash with anything but ferocity compromises too many elements (ie Powermad).

My brother later grabbed Victims of Deception, and in the leadoff track we were treated to perhaps the best generic Metallica intro by a band not named Metallica. Ocasionally, I still break out that MP3, and listen to the first few minutes of it, before following it up with "Disposable Heroes."
