not everybody is in to music. as much of a part of our lives music is, some people are simply arbitrary towards it. some people dig movies, some people dig novels, some people dig politics. you can't be a connoisseur of everything...

I have a shirt that says 'Your favourite music sucks'. From the shirt, people who are into music generally can figure that I am as well. It tends to attract those who, although perhaps not into the same music I am, are sensitive to and appreciative of fine music. Those who like crap - ie, Journey - typically (I think) don't question the shirt. Afterall, if they say, "Journey's my favourite band. C'mon, man, Steven Perry rocks!", they will be found on the receiving end of "Your favourite music sucks."

that's true, althought that can be a bit weird sometimes. I'm a literature student, so my school friends are all into reading and stuff and in books they can take quite a bit, regarding experimentation and stuff, I find it sometimes weird that they can't take the same in music however.

Also a person's taste in music doesn't always define who that person is, so I wouldn't say I'm judging them as a person. Just their taste in music.

for me, someone who answers, "i really love nickelback actually, i have tickets to their show next weekend," will be inherently inferior to someone who answers, "i dig a lot of be-bop, dizzy and bird would be my faves, although i actaully tend to enjoy a good hunk of neo-boppers like marsalis."
don't lie -- admit you do it too.
the question: is this wrong, and are you a jerk for doing it?
you could argue that if, say, they're a big movie bluff, and you say your favourite movie is "Pearl Harbour", they'd judge you right back. and certainly you don't deserve to be judged based solely on your taste in film.

Some people take this " music" stuff too seriously, if you ask me.
I hate music dorks just as hard as people who don't give a shit, sometimes.
These days you can just SoulSeek your way to musical acceptence anyway, so there isn't anything special about someone that likes jazz AND shitty indie rock. Oh yea, don't forget Johnny Cash, otherwise you can't say "hey, I like country too!"
I have all kinds of animosity towards the way people go about listening to music, rather than just their taste (which can easily be faked as I mentioned). I care more about people that can actually tell me WHY they like this or that, rather than just namedropping all the people they think I want to hear.

I am fairly lucky in that a lot of the people I hang out with at parties have decent taste in music, so I don't have that problem very often, but when it does come up I will of course think highly of someone if they say 'I'm really digging Mr. Bungle's California lately' but I don't think I would think less of someone if they said they were into something shite.

It's not really fair to judge a woman you date on her taste in music. I would never assume anyone to share my musical tastes simply to be qualified to hang around with me.
However, my wife - who is Korean - likes some crap - such as some Korean pop music - but she mostly likes good tunes, and she has grown to mostly love my music. Her top three favourite performers now, after meeting, hanging out, dating, and marrying me, are Bo Diddley, Ray Charles, and Bill Withers. Number four is Etta James. Very cool.

I can't help but feel that the people in my school are utterly ignorant of any type of music besides the things they see on TV or hear on radio stations. I can recall in my Sophmore year a kid in my Engineering Drawing I class talking about how good Godsmack is. I almost threw a fit and rambled on how they've been ripping off Alice In Chains constantly and are 50 times inferior to them. Yet every year the class of 2007 (my class) tends to follow one band tha makes it big. Freshmen Year: Yellowcard, Sophmore Year: Hoobastank, Junior Year: Green Day. Yet some of the most prolific bands of this decade and 90's they havent heard (at least 90% of the school for that matter). Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Beck, Procupine Tree, etc. They assume what I listen to is some crazy music they would never get into and just say 'OH yeah that shit, that stuff is way to crazy"..Without any sense of what type of music they perform. Of course, this doesn't change anything about friendship. But I find it funny sometimes. They judge me (including friends) on a musical aspect as being 'weird' or not 'good' music because its not on the radio as much as 50 Cent or 3 Doors Down. Same goes with Nickleback, etc. yet I explain to them that these bands have been ripping off earlier bands of the 90's,etc. and ignore the statement completely. Still the jokes go on between me and my friends on the music we listen to.
And you shouldn't judge women solely on the type of music they listen to. Of course, it could be something you dislike but, they are of course other things to you should ask about. Judging someone based on musical tastes can be a bit shallow. Some people don't really care about music and listen to whatever is on the radio for that matter. Well thats my ramble

Samoan Joe's Barman: You want a pint, you go to the pub.
Bacon: I thought this was a pub!
Samoan Joes Barman: It's a Samoan pub.
