no no, i didn't say i'm growing out of rock music. to say all rock music is "macho posturing, silly [...] lyrics, or overbearing indulgence" is a bit heavy-handed, don't you think? i'm just growing out of a particular brand of hard rock. i'm sure i'm not the first

and no, i don't think i'm more refined or more sohpisticated than you because i don't like led zeppelin anymore. if zep was the only band you like, and i wasn't aware of your broad tastes, maybe then i would have a case.

A lot of times kids have much more advanced tastes in music than adults. I consider myself more sophisticated in my taste in music because I like the same stuff teenagers do as well as stuff like free jazz and atonal 'classical' music. No longer liking Zeppelin, in my opinion, is a sign of one's musical tastes becoming less advanced.

Well, I have to admit, Bhonam was a sloppy ass improviser. He could handle himself in a song-setting, but christ, those live drum solos were bad. Give me any Jazz drummer and I'll listen to them solo for 20 minutes, but not John Bhonam.

And anyway, most of the prog-rock I really like is more Jazz based, if it matters.

Personally, I don't believe in taste becoming more sophisticated, "advanced", etc. Music is music, you like what you like. The only advancement I can think of in musical taste is getting to the point where you're 100% openminded.

I agree. People either have good taste or bad taste, sophistication has nothing to do with it.

There are Zeppelin songs that make me wince, but as a whole I will ever dismiss Zeppelin...

I have loved them for over 30 years... Like any artist, I find myself going in phases (where I listen to a lot of one artist or listen to nothing by them)... That way I never get burned out...

i disagree.

music has to be absorbed in stages; somebody completely ignorant to anything outside the mainstream is NOT going to like the velvet underground. you have to listen to a lot of different music to finally appreciate what the velvet underground stand for.

same could be said for the smiths, john coltrane, and neutral milk hotel. you can't throw these great artists at unready listeners and expect them to enjoy it.

This is one of the reasons I don't like Zep. Also I've never liked the rock'n roll genre that much(Rolling Stones etc) and that kind of songs by them.
