Recommend Me Some Jazz

Thanks to you guys, I've decided to put collecting rock albums on hold for a little while and to pick out an album from six of the Masters of Jazz. First help me choose who to pick from. Miles Davis is the only one who I've already decided is going to be among the six no matter what, and I'm sure that's respected. I'll pick whoever you guys talk me into for the other five. So far the ones who come to mind are Coltrane, Monk, Brubeck, and Morgan. Once you've talked me into picking certain Jazz Masters, then maybe you'll help me pick their best album. Since Miles is a must, also tell me which of his albums would be the best to start with. I have Kind Of Blue on cassette and that's it. But I want something else from him. Should I go with Bitches Brew next?

Your suggestions are welcomed. Most of you guys seem to know a lot more about jazz than me.

As of right now my two favorite jazz tunes are "Take Five" - Brubeck(I know that sounds cliche' but I love it. What can I say?) and Lee Morgan's "Totem Pole".

I'll post this same thread in the Jazz section too.

Perhaps. A couple good alternatives to Bitches Brew are Live Evil and Jack Johnson.

miles is special because he touched so many different styles, and often created a couple of milestone records in each of those styles. birth of the cool, kind of blue, and in a silent way are, and on the corner so different, yet all so essential. check out AMG's picks of his discography, they do a good job.

Miles Davis, "Round About Midnight" belongs in your jazz collection. Get some Art Tatum.

Miles Davis - 'Milestones' is another great one.

Miles' electric albums are really interesting if you like rock, but they have their difficulties too. I think Bill Laswell's remix, 'Panthalassa' is actually the best way into this section of Miles' career.

John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' is surely a must.

I also love Eric Dolphy's 'Out To Lunch' for its loping, doodling bass clarinet.
