Usually when I like a band a few of their records will appear in a block because I like them about the same and generally consider the lot better than what's a bit lower on the list, if you know what I mean. A few selections are quite obscure. In that case I will try to provide a link.

I've always been interested in why people feel the need to rank something so subjective as music is such an objective manner. Why can't we just enjoy what we enjoy and allow others to do the same? why do we need to put things in such a strict 'order'?

This isn't a dig at anyone, just more of a curiosity really.

Because lists are fun?

Sure, they inspire countless debates and no one is ever really totally happy with them, but they're good fun. Plus it gives us all something to criticize.

And I can't do the top 100 because I haven't listened to enough music yet. Plus I'd have a devil of a time comparing rock to rap to jazz to whatever else.

lists ARE fun, you're right. i guess there are two types of people, those who compile lists just for fun, and those who compile lists to say 'these are the 100 best albums ever, and you can't argue because i KNOW i'm right because i'm SO smart and know way more about music than all of you'. i think i've run into too many of those types of music lovers. hehe

I'm part of the elusive 3rd type of list maker. The main reason I see for lists like these is a way to convey those albums I like the most. Not a comparison of who's right and wrong, but a way of offering my favorites up in hopes that you will check them out. To share part of what is important to me in an effort to create a community. Which is why we are all here. To share great music with each other. Yeah there are some people that want to say there list is better, but those people are still living in Elementary School. Please participate and give us some of what you love, so that we know where you are coming from. You don't have to rank them if you don't want to I can certainly understand that.

There's really no need to look at it that way, if you ask me. I think favoritism is a good thing and some people have a specific genre, band or album that defines their taste of music better than any other. Listing them just tells others a little more about us. I wish I listened to so much music that it was impossible for me to pick favorites. As it is right now, I think my top 12 or so is immovable and after that my list could change a hundred different times in the next year even, depending on how much music I come across that I haven't heard before.

Well said. I believe I'm in that group as well.
