If you want an easy introduction, go with the 5th, which is certainly his most "accessible" work. Otherwise, why not start at the top? Symphony 1 is an amazing work, especially when you realize he was just a kid when he created it.

But avoid 2 and 3. They're banal, virtual political tracts that even Shosty himself was not proud of.

For me, this poll was difficult, but I finally had to settle on No. 5 for sentimental reasons. It was my introduction to him, and it's the one I enjoy the most even now. But there are several others I like a lot as well.

The 13th brings tears to my eyes. I have a live recorded version all permeated with coughing and grumbles from the public - man, really a historical happening, the musicians fighting to keep the control... I'll never forget it.
