If you want an easy introduction, go with the 5th, which is certainly his most "accessible" work. Otherwise, why not start at the top? Symphony 1 is an amazing work, especially when you realize he was just a kid when he created it.
But avoid 2 and 3. They're banal, virtual political tracts that even Shosty himself was not proud of.
For me, this poll was difficult, but I finally had to settle on No. 5 for sentimental reasons. It was my introduction to him, and it's the one I enjoy the most even now. But there are several others I like a lot as well.
