If I Were to Buy a Program...

If I were to purchase a music production program, which would you recommend? I already use Reason 3.0 and edit with Sound forge or Audio edit magic. I was considering saving up and buying Cubase SX or Ableton. Which do you think is more versatile? If not either of these two, what program would you recommend?

I've obly used cubase a couple of times and to be honest i had no idea where to start. I've just started using ableton and find that it comes very natural. That being said cubase is probably a more powerful program. What kind of music are you gonna be making? I've been experimenting with real time drum and bass and nothing is better than ableton for that. But i havn't really delved into the DAW processes of the program. Cubase is probably capable of more in the long run but im loving ableton. I also use acid to make loops and/or songs so ableton is more for sound manipulation than actual recording. Download the demos and see what you like. And remember there are tons of free VST's out there that do all sorts of great things.

I'd go and buy a big box of Fruity Loops...

...and then eat them while I play with Cubase.

hey Geryon. as a reason user, i'm in the same boat as you, though i dont have soundforge or any kind of editing software (i should prolly consider that first before anything.)

but honestly, i'd like to try and hold out from any further software purchases until i use what i have to its full potential. that said, i've heard some good things about Ableton Live. i'm also weary of manufacturers that make multiple tiers of the same software (cubase SE, cubase SX, etc...) makes you feel like if you get the lower price one that you're missing out on nuturing the creativity provided by the programs upper strata brethren. but i guess this cancells out of consideration if you have the ducats for the top grade version.

Cubase is very good, I use Acid Pro 5.0 though. I bet you really don't mean "buying" it Those programs are a fortune.

A fortune? I take it you aren't in the market for a Pro Tools HD|3 Accel system. You can easily drop $25,000 for a solid set-up. Add on Digi's flagship controller/console and you can add another $100,000+ to that...

I have to say, I don't care for his assuming Grasshoppa Geryon is lying. However, making a sarcastic post which in essence mocks Spoonful's financial abilities is no better.

What he finds a fortune, you don't. What you find a fortune, others will not.

Wasn't trying to be insulting, just informative. It's not as if I'll ever be able to afford a set-up like that.

Besides, I'm a college student. Where would I get off mocking someone's financial abilities at this stage.
