Yeah, I did some thinking about it, and I don't think it is either.

Do any of you music theorists know of good sound analysis programs that can convert audio files into different numerical values? (IE: peaks, frequency, etc.)

I had found a software that could convert wav data to a midi soundfile (yes, I definitely know what I'm saying), but it was crap : it worked perfectly only when the notes were separated clearly... I lost it a long time ago anyway.

Maybe some software can do it better now.

Try googling with "wav2midi" or things like that...

There sure is software that does that, among others I believe Melodyne can get the job done. There's even software whcih can do this in realtime. You play, midi comes out.

Is this what you were looking for?
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/WaveSurgeon/

Steinberg used to make a software called Recycle that cut up loops into individual hits but i can't find any information on it. They either stopped selling it or repackaged it in cubase or something. I'm looking for a software that does this myself which is why i ran into these today. If you find anything good be sure to share.

Are you talking about Propellerhead's Recycle ? Cause its alive and kicking, chops up loops into single hits and lets you controll their (hits) envelope. It never did handle pitches or notes, thow. Only dynamic characters.
