Cool Power Amps

What are the purpose of power amps as they relate to playing guitar and bass.

a guitar/bass amp has got a pre-amp and a power amp.

the pre-amp receives the guitar/bass signal and process it from the electrical current to a audiable signal.
power-amp takes the signal and pushes it into the speaker and that's where you hear the actual sound of your guitar bass.

pre-amp gives the tone and texture and power-amp pushes the speaker(more watt. more volume).

so if one were to add a power amp to their original amp, they essentailly increase their singal strength. ie if you amp pushes 500 watts you could push that to more than that depending on the power amp?
