Eclectic Collection

4/4/2006

Hi. If you're new to this thread, check out the following list of albums. If any of the titles arouse your curiosity, check them out further on the internet. If you like whatever you read and hear, well then, BUY BUY BUY. I feel as though I owe so much to these artists. Their albums have provided me with a great deal of inspiration and education. Quite a few of the albums are out of print but snap up whatever you can. Some of the best O.O.P. titles that I recommend (if you can find them) are: Captain Beefheart - "Lick My Decals Off, Baby"; Hawklords - "25 Years On"; Icarus - "Kamikaze"; Naked City - "Absinthe"; Naked City - "Grand Guignol"; Orb - "Orbus Terrarum"; Shockabilly - "Vietnam / Heaven"; Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - "Grand Opening And Closing"; T. Power - "The Self Evident Truth Of An Intuitive Mind"; and T. Power - "Waveform". The list that you're about to peruse is the result of a lot of hard work ... and I do mean a LOT (I haven't had a normal job and have put much of my time into this). I've spent well over a year making purchases over the internet, trying to fill an apple box of masterpieces, but so many of the CDs haven't been up to scratch and have had to be sold. The following collection is the result of this enlightening effort. I'm not a regular forum-user, so I'm unsure if there's some code of etiquette or something, but several people seem to have taken great offence at my posting of this list (even though it's on a thread that I started). Anyway, ignore the naysayers. Whoever you are, I'm sure you will have noticed that wherever you go, and whatever you say, there will always be naysayers and trouble-makers. Rest assured that the "nays" here have been unjustified (in all but two instances). Let the music speak for itself. Let it speak to your soul. Happy listening

Okay. I don't have any Kool Keith. Is that a good one?

Yep, the Kool Keith listed here is definitely box-worthy. Eveything here is. I've spent many months perfecting my collection and every one of the CDs is a work of art. A lot of people would say that it's a question of taste ... but these works are beyond criticism, believe me. Pick a few at random and check them out. Just be warned, much of this music is extraordinarily complex and may take many spins to dig. Take hair. Nic

i really have to question the inclusion of 'chaos theory' by amon tobin. seriously. aside from 'lighthouse' nothing much on that disc stands out. it's not that bad but it hardly compares to something like 'permutations' (arguably his best album) or anything else he's put out for that matter. it's a true soundtrack and it works amazingly well in the game but it's missing a little something something to really make it stand out for a solo listen when compared to the rest of his catalog.

Thanks for the criticism. You're right about "Chaos Theory" ... I was already a bit ambivalent about its inclusion as it does indeed seem to lack something. In an interview with Future Music magazine (FM163) Amon Tobin said that he had to exclude his usual assortment of vinyl pops and crackles, and other background atmospheres, so as not to distract the gameplayer. As a result, the overall mix doesn't have enough depth. Another problem is that Tobin really was sticking to the soundtrack formula; the same themes are echoed throughout the album ... so much of it feels interchangeable ... the bassline from the first track, for example, would fit comfortably over some other parts of the album ... argh ... not enough variation! It's true that "Chaos Theory" doesn't deserve a place in the collection, so I've taken it out ... but I can't say I agree with you about "Permutation" - a fair chunk of it's a bit boring and it just doesn't have the same level of production, variation, edginess, or depth as "Out From Out Where" (which truly is a masterpiece). I also thought that perhaps Two Lone Swordsmen's "Tiny Reminders" (and maybe even Richie Hawtin's "DE9: Closer To The Edit") might suffer from a similar lack of FLESH as "Chaos Theory" ... but last night's careful listening allayed my concerns ... so I may even add Radioactive Man's first album, and perhaps Blue Plant Corporation's "Blue Planet" (if I can find it). A couple of albums that I eagerly await the release of are MF Doom's "FM Mood" and Venetian Snares' "Cavalcade Of Glee And Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom-Poms". Buy buy

[Added on March 30th] Actually, if I'm going to be really strict about it, Two Lone Swordsmen's "Tiny Reminders" has to go

I actually like Chaos Theory a lot, myself. Listen to it at least as much as Supermodified and Out, From Out Where

i guess i'll have to give it another whirl

have you played the game yet seerix? i think that's one of the big reasons the CT album isn't really grabbing me as much as his previous work.

and i will totally agree that 'out from out where' has some outstanding production. especially on the last 3 tracks, although i could do without 'verbal'.

You know, this is the first time I have gotten into a game soundtrack without getting into the game itself (usually I have to be into the game to get into the music). I have been meaning to check it out, but just never have. I think there is a PC version for it. I wonder if there is a demo?

I didn't much like Out From Out Where for the longest time, until I listened to it stright through one day. The very last song, I think, is the one that grabbed me most quickly. It's a nice, sunny piece.
