Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins. I heard one of his charts on a public service station on the radio a few night ago. it was sonny rollins- grand street off his sonny rollins and the big brass album. I thought it sounded great I looked up up online and sadly enough didnt find that much detail about him. In that song I heard, he uses the brass excellently, and they arent just blatting backround noise like most you hear (thats what I think). So if anyone has some stuff on him Id like to hear about it, or what you think about his sound.

Sonny Rollins aka Newk is one of the 4 greatest Tenor players of all time (the other three being John Coltrane aka Trane, Coleman Hawkins aka Bean or Hawk, and aka The Father of the Tenor, and Lester Young aka Pres aka the other branch all tenors not incluenced by Bean come from), and one of the two most influential of the last 50 years aka John Coltrane.

Up through the 60's, you can't go wrong with anything he released as leader or played on as sideman. If you have heard The Rollins Stones Waiting on a Friend, he played the sax solo.

Just to name a few with him as leader, all of which I would have recommended before, With Brass.

Saxophone Colossus - one of the most essential Jazz recordings of all time.

A Night at the Village Vanguard
The Bridge (he retired for a couple years and would go and practice on a Bridge at night. The Simpsons used this as a hommage to him for Lisa Simpson.
Newk's Time
Way Out West
Sonny Rollins, Vol. II
Sonny Meets Hawk (he and Coleman Hawkins (his idol) doing their best to cut each other. The old man wins, if you ask Satchmo.)
The Freedom Suite
Sonny Rollins Plus 4
East Broadway Rundown
Tenor Madness (the title track is the only recording with him and Trane.)
Sonny Rollins, Vol. I

If you haven't guessed, I love Newk. If he is on it, I have it.

You don't mention where you live, but just in case you might be near any of these. He just turned 75 in Sept of 2005 aka he is not getting any younger. When he is on his game, The Roof is on Fire!!!!

Even when he is not on Fire, he will smoke the majority of people out there.
