It depends on what you plan to be doing. If yuo really want want to do EVERYTHING on your own youll need some good mics and some good synth, drum beats you can get on the computer.
I would recommend if you're just starting, I'd suggest you use a program w/ premade samples until you get a feel for it.
I HIGHLY recommend eJay Techno 4, it is very easy but produces a great sound.
Once you master this, I'd move on to Cakewalk or something of that nature.
After a while if you get a good enough feel for it, THEN move on to real synth recordings.

i use reason but only as a secuencer, i elaborate my sounds through other software (slicer, sound forge, ableton,....) and then sequence them on reason with a midi controler.
reason is very easy to use i guess that is the main reason why i still use it

I don't like it at all, but I think FL Studio would do it for you. My personal favorite is Cubase SX.

It'as also the best way to become lazy and lose your creative mind...
All you have to do with this kind of crap is put a sample after another...

Cubase SX is simply perfect, but you need to know a few things about sound if you want to use it fully. For example, everytime you want to apply an effect, you need to know first if it's an insert or a send, then you have to create the routing process to make it work. If you use an insert effect as a send effect, your mix will be stupid and will cause you troubles soon or late.

I have used eJay already and I like it. I created some pretty cool tracks with it and it was easy to use. I thought I would move up a bit and try something else that had a complete package...so the suggestion is Cubase SX? Besides a computer, is there any other type of hardware I will need to get or can tracks be made just from the computer?

Cubase SX is perfect because it's a complete solution. You can virtually hook as many virtual instruments as you like, and you don't need a mixer anymore (in other words : no, you don't need anything else).
But keep in mind that Cubase SX is a professional tool : it's VERY hard to use at the beginning, but it's worth trying to understand it, trust me!
(Remember : Cubase SX and Cubase VST are NOT the same program. Cubase VST can now be considered as the prototype of the SX version...)
