Top 5 concerts you've attended.

Some concerts have a strong vibe that can bring an emotional high. What's some of the concerts you've seen that've made you scream, "Damn, that kicked ass!"

#1 - Gov't Mule @ The Ritz

#2 - King Crimson @ The Orange Peel

#3 - Paco de Lucia @ The Duke Campus

#4 - Yes @ Walnut Creek

#5 - Pink Floyd @ Reynolds Coliseum

I saw him on this tour in NC. That was a great freakin' show. It was a toss up between that show and the Pink Floyd. I like Roger better than Gilmore, but I was younger when I saw Floyd and it left a bigger impression.

Did you know that Roger has a DVD of a show during that tour. It is pretty much just like the show I saw. Check it out.

Nice. The one Manson concert I went to definately ranks in the top 3 simply because of how absolutely bananas it was.

Slayer 1986 (Royal Oak, MI) This one always pretty much wins. It is the last time I headbanged for more than 3 seconds, too. Reign In Blood. I was out of high school. We were going to take over the world one poser at a time, and it's probably about as singularly powerful as I've ever felt. The next morning I couldn't lift my head at all, and as I was a bagger at the local supermarket, quite a few neighbors and friends stopped to ask me if I was okay. I had to explain that I had been taking over the world the night before, and when the soreness passed I would be back on the course of enslaving everyone in the name of Satan. I got tipped pretty well that day, and spent the money on coke and weed.

Dead Can Dance 2005 (Seattle, WA) This one just happened last year at the end of the summer. I've noted this already, in another concert thread, but the band is on top of their game some 9 years after the last time they played together, whcih was amazing to me. The band was very together, and I only noticed one flub, right at the beginning. The goddess herself, Lisa Gerrard, still has a voice to which most mortals don't even come close. In 50 years she'll probably have her own religion, assuming of course I live that long Brendan Perry was up to snuff as well, and he still has a surprising knack for songwriting. Certainly, it seems, with the hideous garbage the "adult alternative" stations play such as Coldplay and Sheryl Crow, someone who actually understands what musical transendence meant could score the odd hit or two. If they record another album, as Lisa has hinted, I'll break into the record store the morning of its release.

Michael Hedges/Michael Manring 1995 (Pontiac, MI) One of the last shows I went to while still a resident of suburban Detroit. Manring is not as personable as Hedge, who is a clown onstage. Together, they showed just how much fun music can be. I don't spin their albums often, and the truth is they are both far better musicians than songwriters, which is typically a recipe for disasters. But I've seen them both live separately several times, and this time they brought the best out of each other. Hedges version of "All Along The Watchtower" from his Live on the Double Planet, is my favorite by far, and the version they played here was better than that one. For all of his altered tunings and true mastery of the guitar, Hedges' real gift was the pure joy he got (and shared) playing music. If Joe Satriani was ever at a Hedges show, he would have fallen to his knees in tears. Michael Hedges was a guitar "god" I'd have watched play forever.

Mr Bungle 1999 (Seattle, WA) I'd like to look at the suicide trends for Western Washington for the end of the century. We didn't actually get a summer this year until sometime in August. Basically all I remember about the release of California is that my left-handed 5 string bass, for which I had been waiting 6 months, arrived the same week of its release, and it was (surprise!) pouring rain the day I picked up both. The show had the band as loose as I had seen them (I caught them in 1995 as well) and very fan friendly. Gone were the masks and costumes. It was a very open, honest, and dare I say "vulnerable" Mr Bungle on that stage. Every single song they did was superior to the album, including a version of "Ma Meeshka Mow Sqwoz" where several people in the crowd started twitching their bodies in a way that was as unlike moshing as you could get. This night, there was a true celebration of music which was both surprising and refreshing. And when they left, it STILL wasn't summer yet.

Other favorite shows include: PJ Harvey, Ani Di Franco (both 1995), Melt Banana (2003) those sort of tie for "fifth."

Just five notable concerts:
Explosions in the Sky- I saw them twice, the first time in a very small place. I barely knew them at the time, I think. The opening band played sort of the same style and they were enjoyable enough, you know, tuneful postrockstuff. I thought EITS would be the same. But they were much better. At least at the time they felt pretty transcendental for me too, banging on their guitars and creating a wonderful noise (I don't mean the genre, Merzbowfreaks). It was nice too to see how one of them had to change one of his strings on his guitar and the rest of the band just kept on playing in between. The second time was in a bigger hall and it was also very good, but it was the second time.

dEUS - Another band I've seen twice. The first time it was at a festival (in 2002) and it was just great to finally see them as they hadn't played for a few years. For the rest it wasn't that memorable though. Some of the people in the band weren't very interested in dEUS anymore and they got replaced eventually. This made the second gig, in a genuine concert hall (which usually results in a better concert than festivals, sound is better etc.) in October 2005 a lot better.

CocoRosie- I've seen them three times in the last two years, of which the second time was probably the best. A dancer, a human beatboxer, a dj, from a lo-fi dreampop band they got to lo-fi dreampop mixed with some hiphop, which was nice. I got a bit late to the hall and so had to take place on one of the balcony's (if that's the right term), which resulted in a sore neck. Which was less nice.

Millionaire- All the gigs I saw by them were at least ok, the best was in the same small place where I saw EITS first though.

Other memorable ones: Tindersticks, Sufjan Stevens(once with banjo and map, once with cheerleaders), Mauro Pawlowski & the Grooms, eels, Belle & Sebastian

and I dare Bauhaus to add themselves to this list tomorrow
