ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
i've been wanting to see the secret chiefs live ever since i first heard Book M. i remember hearing rumours about them playing montreal when i was still living close enough to have checked them out but they never appeared. how were they? did they split their tunes into distinct styles like on Book of Horizons or weave them together like on Book M?

they were awesome... to be honest id only heard several tracks by them before going (think im gonna go buy a cd today actuall!!! which would you reccomend?) but from what i learned from a guy in the audience was that the last time they played the band sat around and pretty much played one song into another, all new material. but this concert was intensely rocking. i think they played stuff from all the albums. the main guy (the one from bungle) played all sorts of cool instruments. most of the time he played this 4 stringed guitar (an electric dulcimer mayhaps?) but he also played a 7 string guitar and a sitar guitar. he was by far the best guitarist i have ever seen, changing from hard rock to surf guitar and then to middle eastern rythyms. really superb show.

yeah trey spruance is definitely one of my top guitarists. i've heard some live mp3s in the past mainly stuff from 'Book M' but it's heavy into the middle eastern vibe with a crazy mix of styles. 'Book of Horizons' still had all the same elements as 'Book M' but instead of combining all the styles again it's split into distinct groups (the album actually credits 3-4 'bands'). you'll get a straight death metal track then a traditional middle eastern piece then some weird SC3 original sounding thing.
i never really listend to the first 2 albums (both were named something about grand constitutions and bylaws). trevor dunn played bass on those two albums but bailed out of the chiefs afterwards to focus on fantomas. but from what i remember those first two seemed to have more of a surf vibe throughout.
personally i'd go with one of the Book albums to start. they're both great, the only choice you have to make is if you want an amalgamation or a collection of styles.

Dorian Myshkin show
I recently saw Dorian Myshkin and thought he was extremely good. It was interesting in that his album 'Not Going To Bed' was fairly pop and funk oriented- but in concert he was much more folk oriented. He said it is currently the difference for him between recording and playing live. In any case- if you have a chance see Dorian Myshkin whatever music he is playing...
Listened to Dorian Myshkin with Not Going To Bed

Last gig I saw was 'The Horrorpops'. It sucked.
Looking forward to april, Reverend Hortan Heat in Antwerp or Gent (not decided yet) and Danko Jones in Brussels. In the meantime I hope to pick up some gigs of local rockabilly and punkbands.

Saw the stones on sunday night. They played for 2 1/2 hours and put on a really entertaining if not musically proficient show, which completely completely dispells my theory that they should all be dead and should have stopped touring in the '70s. They were good enough that I was suckered into a $45 t-shirt. I was a little bit put off and confused, though, that Ron Wood didn't play any bass, just backup guitar for Keith.

They have a different touring bassist now? I actually thought that was one of the better moves they made, moving Wood to bass.
