That and the music related messageboards I post in. In fact radiomute has influenced a lot of what I listen to now. Also as I am yet to ever come across an album that I really liked in any music store I've been to, I don't buy any albums. But I would... I think...

For what it’s worth, I find lots of new stuff at the used CD store. I don't know how common those are in the rest of the world, but you just check out the bins. A lot of places will let you listen to the disc, so bingo. Pick some stuff out that looks good, but you've never heard and go. You typically can get a disc for 6-8 bucks.
Also, check out Half.com. You can find almost anything on there for real cheap. It’s linked to wholesalers, used stores, and mail order companies.

Not to mention that I have found the local record store usually has at least one good musically minded person. Bug him. I’m not talkin’ bout FYE or places like that. They’ll hire anybody. A honest to god locally owned record store.

I used to live very richly at a new/used CD place in Rochester, MI, about 12 years ago. You could get $6 in trade for a CD, and used discs were $8. So for 2 bucks I could check out music from a multitude of bands. A lot of Alt-Rock passed through my fingers at that time, and some jazz fusion as well.
Nowadays, most of my research is done online, getting recommendations from sites like this one and friends in whose taste I have grown to trust over the years. What's interesting about the web is how often you end up listening to a band you weren't even looking for, and how personalized my taste has become as a result.

hey yo chiva, i'm a newbie on this whole hub thing, some comp nerd set it up for me. perhaps you could explain to me what's up.
i have a program called DC++, is that what you use? is it possible for me to download stuff from hubs across the world? WTF is a hub? i've been exploring it a bit, but i can't get any other hubs but mine to work. and as a matter of fact, mine doesn't even work any more.
but anyways, pretend i'm a monkey. could you explain to me what hubs are all about from top to bottom?
ps, i know i'm a cretin, and i know this is a big favour. but any knowledge you could pass on would be appreciated.

I try and keep a mental list of things suggested on sites like this, and whatever I've read about that sounds interesting. Then I get to the shop, forget about everything, and buy whatever's cheap and looks cool.
