"Lease" deal????

Hey all...quick question:

what do you folks think of this scenario.

rock BAND X has financed, out of their own pocket, a professional (and I mean professional) record produced by a known rock producer (Andy Wallace, Toby Wright etc....)in the hopes that it will help them secure a Major Label deal. BAND X wants to "shop" this record to labels as a done project and not as some joke demo that needs to be re-recorded.

so I have a couple of questions:

Has anybody out there heard of something like this happening to any known bands that are out now?

In this situation, would BAND X be right to ask for more points from record royalties, since the label does not have to pay for an actual record that the band got done on thier own?? I Have heard that this is called a "lease" deal. Have any of you out there heard of such a thing?

Well i have zero experience with this. But from the sounds of things if you produced a professional record that was SOLID, you might have a shot.

Thats where the demo comes in, if band X is sure that their stuff is really good and have been told so by someone who knows a thing or two then i'd say its worth a shot.

like negate i don't have proper industry experience but from what i understand it should be something like this...

if BAND X really had a professional level sounding album that the label was satisfied with i don't think they'd be negotiating the same type of contract as most bands. i'm pretty sure it would be more of a distribution deal rather than a proper recording contract. not sure if you can really use that to force your way into more royalties but BAND X wouldn't be losing the copyright to their songs which could end up making them more money in the long run if their music gets picked up for commercial purposes (movies, tv commercials, etc.)
