basically there's very little that batio did on that double neck that couldn't have just been done on a normal guitar but then he wouldn't standout from the glut of other mediocre shredders. as for that other guitar it's not the one from 'hotel california' the guys in the Eagles used regular electrics (stratocaster i think).
you're also right about not needing to be in a band to have skill. most shredders can't really play in a band because they overplay their parts. listen to most cds by those guys. the vast majority of what you'll hear will simply be platforms to solo, and if they were serious about tone and emotion they wouldn't be playing that style. sure it's flashy and impressive but once you go past the surface there really isn't much there.
