something tells me that David doesn't think ambient or electroacoustic type music are within the 'electronic' spectrum

My good friend!

Well, electro acoustic clearly doesn't belong to the electronic genre, it's a genre of its own. If any it's actually more related to sound art and classic music than it is to electronic.

Some ambient music like Rameses III clearly donesn't belong in the electronic spectrum, as they mainly use electric (not electronic) and acoustic equipment.

The only record in my list that I will label as electronic is Autechre's Garbage, and maybe Fennesz' Field recordings. Shenzhou was done by using live recordings of Debussy's concerts, so I guess couldn't call it electronic either.

Cocteau Twins used a load of drum machines and synthesizers on Gardlands, and RZA use samplers and drum machines as well...does it make their records electronic?

good to see you around David

You're right about all of the above, but interpretation of music is somewhat tricky. If something sounds like rock music, does it make it rock music? With your explanations, no, it doesn't.

...with the case of Shenzhou, it's a manipulation of a recording, is it not?

...and I was having this similar discussion with someone else recently. Sort of like O'Rourke's 'Eureka' album. his music spans multiple genres, but since 'Eureka' doesn't sound much like an electronic album, does it make him an electronic musician?

It's very subjective. Honestly I feel the term "electronic music" is strongly attached to stuff like tecno, electro and house and all that stuff.

I don't know anybody into avant garde, micro sound, experimental, electro acoustic or sound art saying that he composes / performs "electronic music".
