Not exactly my top 100 or the order I would place those mentioned. Also, Scott Joplin just doesn't belong on there. He was the greatest Ragtime composer, but a Ragtime composition doesn't belong on that list.

For a beginner, it's fine. However, apparently those that put it together must not think much of the 20th centuries composers.

Also, unless I have suddenly gone blind....NOT ONE Chopin?

Joplin but no Chopin or Haydn for that matter?

These are "Top 100 Lollypops," not masterpieces (stuff the guy who made the list thought were "catchy"). Damn yuppies.

Not really. You might actually have to buy more than two CDs, unfortunately. I know we've been real recording-performer oriented in our suggestions. I'm sure even a relatively mediocre piece by a great composer will be interesting enough to start with.

You can find mushy, shitty recordings on sampler CDs if you just want some backround music for bridge games. A movement from Beethoven's Ninth here and Vivaldi's Four Seasons there. I don't see the point in any of that, but I guess there are some great recordings around that feature a few composers at a time.

The Reiner Sound

Ravel (Rapsodie espagnole & Pavan For A Dead Princess)
Liszt (Totentanz with Byron Janis on piano)
Weber (Invitation For The Dance)
Rachmaninov (Isle Of The Dead)

-----------------

Suite No. 1, for military band in E flat major
Gustav Holst

Fantasia for organ in G major, BWV 572
Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach
Arranged for winds

Music for the Royal Fireworks
George Frideric Handel

Cleveland Symphonic Winds
Conducted by Frederick Fennell

Sorry guys, I just don't listen to compilations.

However, here is a post with several Satchmo posts with much knowledge. It's concentrated stuff, so be careful.

Seriously, you let me know which works interest you and I can easily recommmend a particular recording to get ahold of.
