Tom Petty up there with Dylan, Springsteen, etc.?

personally i think so. his lyrics may be a bit more playful and typically not as deep, but the music is catchier and he has pumped out so many great singles/songs. there's something about Petty's songs, they make me feel like i have/am experiencing the 70's and early 80's (not really cognizant of anything before 90's, i'm mid 20's), even his newer tracks.

I always liked Petty. There was of course his romp with the Travelling Wilburys which I am always refreshed to listen to, but his recent album The Last DJ is definitely one of the best criticisms of the industry itself that I've heard in a long, long while. If you haven't heard it, get it. Now.

i love that track, but i haven't listened to the whole album in a while, so can't remember how much i like the album. not too long ago i started collecting songs i like in a folder, i got 21 Tom Petty tracks in there, many that aren't on his greatest hit type compilations; and i haven't scoured all his albums yet. so personally i think the dude has lots of killer tracks.

Because not only is Tom Petty in the same league as Bob Dylan, apparently Bruce Springsteen is as well. Wow...

I don't know about the Boss (who is nothing to sneeze at, no matter what), but Bob Dylan seems to think that Tom is qualified to be on his stage.

It is possible, of course, that Tom just slept his way to the top. I mean, just look at those two.

Being a good musician doesn't necessarily make one a good music critic.

That said, the publicity stunt is not something alien to the music world.

Because I hate Tom Petty's music, of course.

Not so fair, but you have the right to hate whatever you want to hate.

so long posting on a music forum and you haven't learned yet that what you think (or what anyone thinks) regarding music is an opinion, or at least how to portray opinionated statements as such. k so anyways, i'll take that as a no, on not only petty but also springsteen.
