Portishead and Boards of Canada.

Portishead because they're really good and wont sound to alien for your first venture. BOC just because I think you would like them alot. Try Four Tet, M83 and Venetian Snares, too (they arnt similar in any way).


oh and lets not forget Autechre's Tri Repetae++. give it a good listen and it will be your gateway.

I asked the same question a few months back and the best starters for me were:

Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do
Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy
Portishead - Dummy
Squarepusher - Go Plastic!
Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children

I enjoyed all of them although the first listen of the Aphex Twin albums was an experience I won't forget.

my starter was Confield from Autechre. many of times i mention this, but if it wasn't for that album im not sure that i would have plunged into this music.
