And what's the difference between 'gangsta' and 'playa'?

I think gangsta rap did come from Compton though. If you listen to Kurupt he says, "And if it wasn't wasn't for the West, these rap niggas wouldn't need a vest around dey chest".

And for your second question I would say a gangsta is like a thug. Or at least someone portraying a thug image ie: 50 Cent, since he really did jail time for something or other.

Playas I think of as clowns or smooth people. Or again portraying the smooth image of getting mad girls ie: Nelly, who probably could've gotten girls since he almost became a pro baseball playa.

I'm not familiar with Kurupt...but I wasn't asking about the geographical origin of the gangsta-thing. More like "how & why did it develop".

Hm, 50c is also a playa then. All his videos are about chicks and partying in da club. No jail stuff or violence. But I thought Nelly wanted to become a pro basketball player.

How and why it developed... who knows? You can only listen to Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash for so long I guess.

His softer song "21 Questions" probably had the most crime in it. But that's where pimps come in. Combine the gangsta and the playa and you get pimps.

Pimps seem to be good at making people "grow up."

I, too, do have the suspicion that they're using different words for the same thing. But then again maybe I just didn't get the details yet.

Guess I need to focus more on Rap/HipHop to be able to tell pimps from gangstas and playas.

Ok, next question:

What about that East Coast vs West Coast thing?
