Primus = The Residents+Rush+Chili Peppers style funk metal...with some Crimson and other Prog influences ripped off here and there as well.

It's the extent to which they rip off the Residents that really bugs me. I can listen to a Residents influenced group like They Might Be Giants, Uz Jsme Doma, or even something that goes as far as Renaldo And The Loaf (featured on The Residents' own label), but Primus just screams of plagiarism and takes it too far for me to enjoy at all.

In the case of Renaldo and the Loaf for instance, it always sounded like they were deliberately expanding on one aspect of the Residents' sound, but never imitating a specific piece of music or trying to present their music in a way that was deceitful...of course, being on the Residents' label helped in their creative credibility. Primus seems to enjoy copying the Residents without expanding on what they did beyond adding a funk metal backdrop.

Well, The Residents never dipped into Funk-Metal like Primus, but as a first step into the Residents' substantial catalogue, I'd definitely say Duck Stab.

It's actually about to be re-released by Mute records soon, so look out for it.

Korn: Korn

I had the inverse experience of most people, hating the band in my early/mid teens and only learning to appreciate them later on. I really don't care for anything after their first two records, but their self-titled debut is a masterpiece of alternative metal, inspiring dozens of bands in its wake...most of them being terrible, but some quite good (Sepultura, for one...).

It's also one of the best sounding records of the '90s in engineering/mix terms...nothing else sounded anything like it at the time.
