Can you focus your question a little bit tighter? Name a few bands you already like or something? I consider just about anything that isn't 4/4 pop dance music to fall loosely under the IDM moniker.

Here are some I thoroughly enjoy:
Aphex Twin, Enduser, Portishead, Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher, Venetian Snares, Monlith

Definitely check out 'The Flashbulb - Kirlian Selections', I just got this disc the other day and I'm loving it. Has a bit of Venetian Snares, Squarepusher and Beefcake all rolled into one, but also showcases some really beautiful 'acoustic' instrumentation.

For that matter, Beefcake and Kattoo would be worth checking out, though I suspect you've already heard them if you're on this board...

perhaps my idea of what IDM is isn't perfect. Portishead - Dummy is not IDM?

most people label it as 'trip hop' because it has a trippy feel to it and adds a little bit of a hip-hop backdrop.

well, there is a lot of good stuff out there. maybe you'll enjoy "kirlian selections" by "the flushbulb" on sublight records or the controversial but still amazing tycho .
and don't miss venetian snares " rossz csillag alatt született" on planet mu !
if you are looking for more portishead like trip-hop music, check out atomicas "metropolitan" album.
there should be be samples everywhere. enjoy!
