The New Pornographers
Twin Cinema - Matador
November 2004 - April 2005
As soon as I started listening to the first song on this album (Broken Beads) I knew this was going to be something diffrent from Mass Romantic or The Electric Version. This very first song defines the album as a whole nicely. It has a much cleaner edge than previous releases by The New Porno's and the vocals are much more distinct than in the past. One thing that disappointed me are the keyboards in this album. Though not badly done they don't deliver the same level of catchy hooks as they have in the past. At some points I hafta admit their new sound really works for me. Songs like the previously mentioned 'Broken Beads', 'Falling Through Your Clothes', 'Stacked Crooked' and the title track 'Twin Cinema' are all top notch. Overall of the 3 New Porno's albums this is my least favorite. However this dosn't mean I didn't like the album. In fact so far I'm really enjoying it and I'm actually amazed that these guys (and girl) can keep turning out stuff of such high quality. Hats off to The New Pornographers.
In the end I give this album a 9/10
(Mass Romantic and The Electric Version are 10/10's)
Note: I'm very biased when it comes to this group because I'm friends with a couple band members and one of the first concerts I ever saw they headlined. So there's a fairly good chance that most will not be such devout followers of this group.
considering that I'd give Mass Romantic a 3/10 I'm pretty sure this is one record I can pass by. Of course considering that there is no way for me to get any mp3s now it doesn't really make much of a difference
