In response to people comments of course the majors only care about money at the end of the day the industry is a buisness and the sole purpose of any buisness is to make a profit, the industry has always been that way and will continue to always be that way. As for being aloud to download singles there is the possibility that people will only download one track but surely if they like that track they may then go on to buy the album. Legal downloads are a great way of letting people try something which they wouldn't normally listen to. It's no different to people buying singles if anything its better as its cheaper and people are more likely to buy them, its a great form of marketing

The label industry has two jobs: to make money for themselves(primarily), and to make money for the artist. When the industry becomes redundant, then the artists will take on that dual role. I'd like to believe that everyone in the world is a philanthropist and wants only what's good for everyone else, but we're more likely to get artists whose priorities go: Make money, be popular, (edit; 8:49pm)perform music.

Actually we're mostly getting 'artists' who do NOT write music, but Do make money and ARE popular. For a little while.

"Perform music"...I don't know. Does playback count as musical performance? That's a tough call.

Say, RattInClothes. Do you actually like RATT?
I know it's off topic; I hope it won't get deleted though.

I'd actually just stolen the name. I've never been motivated enough to listen to them. Maybe if I did I might be able to imply some sort of double meaning.

there's something about the legitimacy and authenticity of owning a physical album that will never see me swaying to the side of mp3s. if you're offered the same album on a legitimate CD and a burnt mp3 disc, what one are you going to take? although you pay a price for it, you're going to want the real deal.
and you CAN tell a difference between CD quality and random internet 128 kps mp3s.
but you can break this argument down further...
why should the album format be the best? why should a 10-song LP be considered the genuine accomplishment of art over a single?
of course, any one of us could justify it, but the general CD-buying masses can't pick out dynamics, shifts, tones, moods, and general cohesiveness. we could pick an album and name a song whose meaning and impact is dramatically changed simply by its placement within the album. recurring or underlining themes and moods can run through an album, unifying songs to create a cohesive and gripping whole. it's a great medium to see how an artist progresses, and in some cases, can be a contextual comment on the issues du jour.
there's just something in the way she moves, i guess... perhaps one day single orientated artists who make shitty albums will become completely absorbed into itune world, forever riding us of horrid filler albums promoting the one strong single. this could be a great thing; collecting the odd shining moments in filler albums and turning them into a few decent singles would improve the quality of singles and completely remove shitty filler albums. the idea of releasing an album behind a single is fruitless if the single is the only decent song.
i'm tired... sorry for the rant.
