it has a very nice acoustic guitar (a la their Boom Bip remix) and some very clean bass-heavy drums (also reminiscent in the Boom Bip and Beck remixes). there are the standby mellotron flute sounds throughout, as well as a very nice Moog that sounds like something from Air's Moon Safari record. under the whole piece is the calming sound of whooshing ocean waves. it's truly heaven, crushed into a 6 minute piece.
as a Boards fan, i'd say it's not so much a lateral move, but more of a visitation to their Old Tunes-era sound...very folky and chordal and repetitive, but yet with a much cleaner production than even Geogaddi...very very slick stuff here.
i was actually talking about it yesterday with a friend of mine, about how timeless alot of the BoC music is...and that as an analogy, Boards of Canada are like a fine wine; wine will always taste like wine, but the older it gets, the better it tastes. their music will always have a degree of sameness to it, but because it's so well done, you don't want it to change, and within that scope, it gets better and better.
comparitively, i don't think a band like Autechre are timeless. to me, the difference is that they're on a timeline...what they're doing is constantly moving and growing and changing, and so alot of their music is more of an "in the moment" document of who they are, where they've been, and where they're going...whereas BoC are continually tapping into one thing that is always there, and that is the undeniable beauty of nature, love and good music.

Yea, I've been playing this non-stop. I love it, but the friend that sent it to me hates it, so I don't know what to tell other fans.
This is why I wait and buy my albums. I wanna make sure I'm getting the version that the artist wanted me to hear...

oh i'm planning on preordering both the CD and the vinyl, make no mistake.
a new Boards of Canada album is like beholding a rare planetary alignment that only happens once every 300 centuries.

I must say, that this is some of the best hyperbole, which I have come across online.
After that type of hyperbole, even I have to give this a listen.

(I believe this is the right one, because I got it from the same source that I got Autechre's Untilted from two months before its release date)

As did I, but I promise you, it has to be the wrong one. I will stand by my belief

And seven days from now, I will be too
I remember the last time I walked into a record store...the lights blinded me, all those posters overwhelmed me. I actually had to "walk" to each section, and there was this guy, wearing an apron, who asked if he "could help" me. I was about to tell him that no, I can type my keyboard WITHOUT any help, but then I realized I was far, far from home.
So I asked him where I could find Niyaz...he pointed to the pop section, aisles and aisles of plastic. Took me several hours to wade through them, and when I reached the counter, dazed and tired, to pay for my one CD, the guy told me "you know, they ARE in order." By what? Most prominent guest personnel? Average customer review? Release date? "No," he said, "they are in in order by name..."
I hope I never have to go back to that horrible place again
