Don Pullen
Any thoughts on this pianist? He seems to have a very distinctive approach to free playing, working in a similar realm of intuitive structure as Cecil Taylor, though his fast runs often evoke Tatum/Tyner/Powell more often than the aforementioned. As of the moment, the only album I have w/ him as leader, or co-leader actually, is " Capricorn Rising", and absolutely love it (( I have a dozen or so of him as side-man )), although his records as leader seem pretty hard to find (( of course, this is essentially directed to Satch )), so if anyone has any hints or links, I'd be appreciative. Anyone else a fan?

Any friend of Schumann is a friend of mine.

He...Who Drops Knowledge

The man had skilz, with a big S.
Satchmo dropped knowledge onto the Grasshoppa's before about Pullen.
As I said then, a must have reissue.

He would play so violently that he would dislocate his finger while playing, pop it back in place and keep playing. He also had a tendency on occasion, to cut his fingers and bleed on the keyboard, which when you consider how he died, you didn't want to be following him those nights.

On the first two discs, which make up the Mosaic Select, it's basically Mingus' one time quartet with Cameron Brown on bass.
Don Pullen
George Adams
Dannie Richmond
Cameron Brown
YO!
For Breakthrough alone, it is worth getting this set.
It's DA BOMB!, but you also get Random Thoughts and Song Everlasting, which are YO! inducing.
New Begginnings doesn't match the rest, but who cares after those 3 classics.
All of those were out of print, and sold for a good deal.
And let me tell you, George Adams isn't no bumb in general and especially not on these recordings! Adams and Pullen were co-leaders of their quartet.

You mean, every post for some sort of suggestion on almost anything, isn't essentialy directed at Satchmo?

How is it I always manage to miss these.
Either my vision really sucks, or I'm just not reading threads as thoroughly as I could be.

What's even more disturbing, is that you're not hunting down, reading and copying onto your hard drive (I would have said memory, but we know how pointless, that would have been. ), each and every Satchmo post.
