I concur, kicked ass.
Still, When I joined, I got the shit flamed out of me by you guys for liking Linkin Park and Nickelback, and got told I should listen to, among other bands, Queens of the Stone Age, Phish and the Flaming Lips. Suprise suprise, I loved the latter, and grew out of Linkin Park and the like not two months afterward. The online music snobs can make a difference.
My only other problem with the stepping stone method is that it lessens the chance of having a "wow moment" when you finally get to the good stuff. When I was like 11 I had no developed taste and didn't actually spend any time listening to music. When my dad played my "Stairway" in the car, it was a huge fucking deal. Nic Harcourt described it as his "third eye getting a squeegee," when he first heard London Calling. There's nothing like that feeling of getting your world turned upside down by music you've never been exposed to before, at least for me. The same thing happened when I first heard Otis Redding. But if the kid has already heard the green day, which in all likelihood won't blow his mind, he probably won't get his mind blown by DK.
