Who exactly is the wannabe attempting to insult? No one mentioned Green Day or Sum41 as being Punk in this thread, that I can see.

And telling people they can suck donkey ass, of course, proves Punk isn't dead.

That's beside the point, and really has nothing to do with this particular thread.

The only person that has mentioned them is Jay Tee, and he clearly stated he doesn't think they're Punk.

I really don't think Green Day belongs with Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. They're not at that level.

If you want to get someone into punk, early Green Day is a good intro. Then they can move onto the Clash or the Dead Kennedys.

I disagree. Why not start someone on the Clash or Dead Kennedys? Do you have to work your way up through shitty music before you can listen to the good music?

but if you don't have someone with knowledge to guide you how are you supposed to even know about the DK? i give green day a modicum of respect for their early work which does provide an ample gateway for kids to get into better punk rock. you have to walk before you can run.

I still don't see the point of going through Green Day when you can go straight to DK and the like. Green Day isn't walking so much as a fat incompetant guy running.

yeah but you're looking at it from the perspective of someone who knows. imagine being an AVERAGE 12 year old only starting to notice music. what are the first steps you're going to take? easily accessible tv action or the opinions of a bunch of pretentious bastards on the internet?

besides we were talking early green day. dookie was a fine album to give kids a taste of what punk should be. it's like the dilluted, safe for kids and parents version. once they get used to that then the step to something of substance like DK or the clash is a lot simpler. not only because other people 'in the know' tell them it's good but the person they already admire from the TV band would have refered to the groups too.

personally i can trace back more than a few artists of note that i got into directly because of flea's opinions. hendrix / pastorius / monk / mingus / dolphy are mostly all names i'd heard in passing in my teen years but had never checked out until a musician i already admired praised them. i'm sure i would have checked most of them out eventually but knowing that they were 'flea approved' so to say made me a little more inclined to check them out sooner rather than later.

i'm certain there are people out here today who got into black flag / the clash / DK / minor threat / the descendents because they heard billy joe talking about them in interviews and took the next step from just being aware that the groups existed to actually listening to them. whether or not they'll admit to it today is an entirely different matter.
