I thought punk as a genre was a result of the ideology, that is, so long as the punk idea/motivation/intention is there the genre/style is punk. In this way 'punk' may manifest in many forms.
I'm not sure if I'm going off the mark but I see it in a similar way to how Indigenous art is percieved here in Australia. I met an Indigenous artist once who made the point that the portrayal of Indigenous art as a thing of the past, something ancient and over, was misguided and false. The ideals of the Australian Aboriginies were not lost and with these ideas, Indigenous art was still evolving. So, while it didn't always look like the dots and lines of the clichéd painting, it was still very much Aboriginal art.

It has already been put forward--chiefly by me, to sound selfserving--that: 'punk' is not necessarily 'punk rock.' My own argument has been that they are by definition different: punk music is an appendage of punk cultural ideology, whereas punk rock per se is germane only to itself.
Perhaps one needn't be so strict, as a more commonly held outline of punk might be that: punk qua music style may amount to punk rock, yet punk rock qua ideology is not necessarily punk nor generally is it. Viz., there may be some overlap per quod, but per se different.
BTW, studying law SUCKS.

you write like youve got a shovel up your ass. or was that intent? who the hell knows?
anyway, this is a stupid discussion, its already been adressed a number of times already. whatever happened to good punk rock? you figure that out by yourself. if you look, its there. simple as that.

now, punk as a movement, with suburban kids listnening to no one, and staying out late drinking beer, i guess youd have to look in your own neighborhood. i have no idea.

There are still some good punk bands out there, such as Oxymoron.
But alot of today's "post-punk" bands aren't even that terrible musically.
It's the whiney and just plain bad vocalists that ruin it in my opinion.
Listened to Oxymoron with Fuckers Everywhere

Yeah punk got a face lift, like just about everyone who wants to be someone in LA. But its still there if you scratch away the surface of chart-punk. I'm not going to pretend I hate bands such as Green Day, because I'm a big fan, but I know what punk is, and they ain't it! Wow just as I finished that sentence The Sex Pistols came on my shuffle list. Punk at its finest.
Anyway, in conclusion to this essay, check out The Unseen. They're pretty good.
