Come on. Is it really so bad if a bunch of Highschool kids wanna be 'punks', too? Let them have their share of fun, it's not like punk was a religion or something. Besides, if you prefer the classic stuff...just listen to your old CDs and ignore the new stuff.

Can an idea DIE? No stupid, an idea was never alive in the first place. An idea does not begin or end anywhere. Punk was never INVENTED, punk can never DIE.

Oh, 'punk rock?' What, are you like twelve or something? Read a book for christs sake, try being a punk for a change.

I gotta agree with Mr. Gooze here, punk ain't dead... I know Vancouver still has a considerable underground punk scene going on. One band that really restored my faith in punk is the rebel spell. This band dosn't do anything to try to give themselves a punk image, none of huge spikes, mohawks or anythin. Their music is all about activism and not takin crap from anybody and their live show hits you in the face like a fist. If any of you come to Vancouver make sure to see their politically charged punk.

A lot of it's dead, but a lot of people feel the same way. A lot of bands are pissed at all the garbage out there...

Punk ain't dead, punk in the charts just ain't punk.

Yah, it's true. Global Threat, Career Soldiers, etc. are all perfect examples of what real punk is today. Underground and underrated music.

You took the words out of my mouth.

I mean, what if an author tried to put out the same book twice, with a different name, and pass it off as legitimate? That would be contrued as completely ridiculous. 'Punk' bands have been doing this for 26 years now. If you take a hard look at most supposedly punk bands, you'll see that they don't just take cues from Stiff Little Fingers, The Damned, The Ramones, Minor Threat, etc.; they rip them off. Passing the same 4-chord 'angry man' bullshit as authentic isn't just tired; it's plagiarism.

I don't know enough about punk history to claim that it's alive or dead but I'll pose the following opinion:

I think that the saying "punk is/isn't dead" could refer to 2 completely different things.

1. It could refer to the punk ideology.
2. It could refer to the actual genre dealing with the style of music.

There are certainly plenty of bands that have and always will follow a similar style to early punk. Punk's roots show up in many veins of music.

There are also TONS of bands that mimic the punk attitudes (fuck the system, be original, etc).

The problem lies in the fact that it is IMPOSSIBLE to be a new TRUE punk band that follows both rule 1. and 2.

You can't use the style of music without breaking the punk's #1 rule of not conforming. I believe you can still make music that has the style of punk, or the ideology of punk, but never both.
